Imaginative Table Settings

You’re invited to dinner at a friend’s house. The table is set. It’s stunning. You smile. It feels special and the food hasn’t even arrived. Evelyn Wilfling has featured in this mag. on many occasions because of her innate style. Go to her home for lunch or dinner and you’ll always find food presented with thought and creativity. In this article we look at some of the ways Evelyn prepares for the simple meal or the occasion setting. I’ve also combed through many magazines and videos to identify the basic principles of creating imaginative table settings and food presentation. Let’s take a look…

A special summer lunch

Principle 1: Attention to detail is everything

The use of an overall white/ metallic/ green colour palette gives a fresh look to this seafood lunch. Tiny heart-shaped chalkboards are used an name cards. Not a flower in site, the Rosemary in tiny jars with a string bow around the neck is a natural look. The rosemary would also add a delightful scent to the meal! as they say..its all in the detail!

Principle 2: Create a Theme

The setting above was for a simple autumn lunch. Mushroom risotto, mixed salad, coffee and chocolates were served. Italian ceramic dinnerware and wooden platters were used. Aubergine coloured wine goblets, navy provencal print napkins and a scattering of reddened vine branches complete the look.

Principle 3: Colour coordinate your look

Here a simple palette of natural elements such a wood, woven place-mats are paired with white candles and pale pink flowers. Elegant and yet a special occasion look. Note the cenre arrangements are low and glassware is kept simple and transparent. Simple white napkins and cutlery tied together complete the look.

Principle 4: Every meal can be simply styled

Whether its a casual lunch, a BBQ or an evening meal for yourself take the time to present your food with an eye to colour, texture and a sense of style. Gather a collection of  multi sized  wooden platters. They are an inexpensive way to present simple meals. Sunday brunches are a great way to gather family and friends and entertain simply and well.

Whatever the event, have fun, be bold and experiment. Try out different looks and then relax and enjoy the conversation.
